Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit; including evidence of the ability to:

safely handle bituminous materials on at least two occasions, including:

storing and using at least four bituminous materials

provide burn First Aid to a simulated burn and tag accordingly

extinguish a simulated fire involving a bituminous substance.

During the above, the candidate must:

identify and report on hazards related to worksite and work activity

work with others to complete the safe handling of bituminous materials that meets required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems

using signage to advise others of work activity

clean, check, perform maintenance on and store equipment

complete housekeeping activities.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

communication techniques to receive and clarify work instructions

safety data sheet (SDS) compliance processes

key components of job safety analyses (JSAs)/job safety environmental analyses (JSEAs)/safe work method statements (SMSs)

key legislation for safely handling bituminous materials

key policies, procedures and established requirements for safely handling bituminous materials, including those for:

work health and safety

equipment safety

treating bitumen burns

operating and maintaining equipment

material calculations

work quality

environmental protection, including waste disposal and recycling

housekeeping

key factors affecting work activities described in performance evidence above, including:

bituminous materials and their characteristics and hazards

equipment types, characteristics and limitations.
